My best lizard photo to date, nearly stepped on the little bugger coming out of my Bungalow.
One of things that I really love about Bottle beach is the abundance of life, you really are living in the jungle. To give you an idea they have:
Geckos, Monitor lizards (maybe 1m long), tropical fish, spiders, monkeys, at least 5 kinds of ant, birds that sound like car alarms, eagles, crabs, snakes, termites, a large collection of different butterfly species, a bunch of weird bugs and beetles. And I am sure there is more I am leaving out.
To see and hear all these creatures living in wild, not behind bars or glass is a very special experience.

Smile

What started out to be a one week stop on Bottle beach ended up being our one stop destination. We left Bottle Beach One resort after only 2 nights after being asked to leave the restaurant for not wanting an incorrect order.

This turned out to be the best thing that could of ever happened to us. We found Smile bungalows a more rustic friendly place on the same stretch of sand. Smile bungalows was more like a small community than a guest house, after only being there for 1 day we made  many new friends who had either been to bottle beach before or were staying for a long time. What could be better than days spent on the beach for me and in the hammock making music for Rupert. At night the restaurant was buzzing with chatter, Backgammon matches and card games while enjoying the best banana pancakes and snickers coconut shakes. We truly had died and gone to heaven !

Six weeks here and still feeling like it was not long enough, we are already planning our next visit.

P.S.

Sorry for the long break but there is no internet at Smile where we have been for the last 6 weeks.

Paradise

Two hours before the ferry was scheduled to depart we had asked a women in a travel office in Koh Tao to phone up and book for us our recommended accommodation . With our previous experience with being ripped off for bus tickets we reluctantly handed her a deposit for 840 THB ( £17) and hoped for the best. We had our fingers crossed as we got picked up from the port and taken by taxi north of the island to board a long tail boat with only 3 other people, looking at every little bay with great anticipation for Bottle beach. It was not a disappointment we were welcomed on to a beautiful beach with “Welcome home!”. Its a smallish bay with only 4 guest houses and we are in the nicest at 700 THB (£15) a night. However being so secluded comes at a price like 100 THB (£2) for an hour of internet so we wont be updating the blog very often. We are currently booked for 7 nights but could stay longer…

2 week plan turned into 24 hours on Koh Tao
Last time on Koh Tao we stayed in the beautiful Tanote bay in a remote area with crystal blue water and friendly staff. After finding out through reviews that the Tanote family resort wasn’t what it once was we decided this time to book one night at Sairee beach (popular area) so we could hire a motorbike to find the best spot on the Island. But things did not go to plan as some of the “roads” are near vertical rocky paths only accessible by 4x4. We made it down one rough path leaving Kimbo saying “I dont want to do this anymore!!”. We made it to one resort on the same east side as Tanote but were disappointed by choppy, cloudy water with a lot of seaweed so that ruled out the East side. Add to this the cost of a 10min 4x4 taxi was 200 THB (£4)  which will get you a 3hr drive in north Thailand and things didn’t look great. We tried some more locations on the West side but they were crowed and many had little to no sand. Alex and Milly had been recommended by friends to stay on Bottle beach on the island of Koh Phangan (which ironically was the least favourite island of our last trip) and they described the perfect little get away that can only be reached by small boat. They had to leave the next day from Koh Tao to Koh Samui so we decided to book the same ferry boat they were on and head off to Bottle beach.
